Research background

MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded not by nuclear DNA but by a short reading frame within mitochondrial 12S rRNA, making it one of a small class of "mitochondrial-derived peptides" discovered only in the last decade. Research suggests it acts as a metabolic signaling molecule, activating the AMPK pathway to promote glucose uptake and improve insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle, and animal studies link it to reduced diet-induced weight gain and insulin resistance. Circulating MOTS-c levels have also been reported to be lower in humans with type 2 diabetes and obesity, positioning it as an active area of research into metabolic aging and mitochondrial-nuclear communication.
